HOOVER HIGH SCHOOL DRAMA

Hoover drama provides students with the opportunity to explore different areas of theatre and develop a wide range of skills. Students get to participate in hands on activities such as building and designing sets, publicizing productions in the community, working in a broad range of backstage work, acting, and leadership opportunities. For years Hoover drama has brought forth the best of the best students at Hoover High school and will continue to shine a light on the exemplary students the department has gathered.

For decades former drama director Denis Hildreth built a department that became respected and acknowledged in the Des Moines area. Annually receiving top honors in IHSSA and improving the quality of performances, the department’s growth and success throughout the years is in indisputable. But the honors and recognition that the department has received hasn’t been as important as the individual growth and accomplishments of the students who have passed through the department.

Students involved in the department become a part of an open, diverse, and friendly group of kids. They become more open to others, overcome fears, grow as individuals, and develop public speaking skills. Not only do students get to work in an environment set up like professional theatre, but they also receive the support and coaching of other students and directors.

The department is now under the new directorship of alum Chelsea Cunningham who has, over the course of her first year, created a more diverse department that put on three spectacular shows last year which received an incredible amount of positive feedback. Her dedication and commitment to the program has shown throughout the school, bringing in more interest to the program from different groups of students.
